Global Silicon Carbide Market Research Report 2017

Author: Cao Liuying, QYResearch Chemical & Material Research Center
Silicon carbide, also called corundum or refractory sand, was firstly founded in the year of 1891. Nowadays, silicon carbide is usually made by quartz sand, petroleum coke or coal tar, wood chips (salt needed when green SiC produced), through the melting process in the resistance furnace.
According to the <Global Silicon Carbide Market Research Report 2017> revealed by QYResearch, China is the largest producer of silicon carbide. There are more than 200 companies engaged in the silicon carbide melting in the country for the time being. In the year of 2016, the silicon carbide capacity in China reached to 2.3 million MT, holding about 75% market share globally. However, due to the severe oversupply issues, the operating rate in China keeps below 50%.
In addition, China is also the largest consumer of silicon carbide, with the consumption volume of 0.65 million MT in 2016, contributing about 50% share in the global consumption market. Since the export quotas was canceled in 2013 in China, the export volume increased year by year. The export volume reached to 0.32 million MT in 2016. Apart from China, Europe becomes the second largest producer and consumers of silicon carbide globally. European output was about 0.2 million MT in 2016 while consumption volume surged to 0.3 million MT, which indicated that the region still depends on import to cater for its own demand.
According to its appearance, silicon carbide can be divided into black SiC and green SiC. Due to its distinctive characteristics, silicon carbide has been widely used in metallurgical industry, abrasives industry, refractory industry, ceramic industry as well as electronics industry. Analyst of QYResearch noted that, metallurgical industry is the largest consumer of silicon carbide, which contributed about 33% consumption share in 2016.
As requirements on energy efficiency are improving, it is estimated that the power electronic components market will become promising in the future. Thus, the electronic components based on silicon carbide will benefit from that. Market insiders anticipate that the electronic industry will provide stimulations for the silicon carbide market in the coming years.
